  • Minimizing the risk of public nudity

Summarizing from my experiences of being nude, here are the factors that I think minimize the risk of complaint:

    1. There are few people in the vicinity.
    2. The others don’t feel threatened.
    3. I am doing something ordinary, not indecent/lewd.
    4. I’m not invading the others’ personal space.
    5. The encounter is, or can be, brief.

On a lark, I snuck away from work yesterday and headed for Lake Erie. I haven't been down there yet this year, it was a gorgeous day and the boss was away, so everything was just right.

This is a long stretch of remote shoreline that is accessible only on foot for boat and has a reputation as a c/o area. (Mark has written about this spot a number of times).

Not seeing anyone fishing, I immediately stripped off and resolved that anyone out there was going to most likely be accepting of nudity.

About a mile out there were two rubber boats with 2 couples some 100 yards off shore - just kept hiking without so much as a flinch to covering up! No reaction, but it looked like the guys were nude.

Another 1/2 mile along I spotted a guy sitting on a large chunk of driftwood - couldn't see him as he was on the other side of the tree, but still elected to no coverup. Finally got close enough and lo and behold: he and another sunbather were stark raving nude! They said they had debated all along my walk up whether I was nude or not - of course I had the same uniform as they did .

We chatted a bit and then it was time to keep going ... they had packed up and started back about 10 minutes before I did from further along the beach. I did notice they put their shorts on as they approached the spot that fishers normally hangout.

The 2 couples were still out there in the lake and one of the men gave a friendly wave as I passed by. Obviously no troubles there eh(?) (that's a little Canadian-speak ).

I stayed nude right out to within 40 feet of the car - another car in the lot had a guy sitting in it, and it turned out to NOT be one of the 2 from the beach.

Downside: since I had put my beach shoes in the van for a trip to Jersey/Gunnison, I didn't have them for the Lake Erie outing - luckily I have toughened my feet to the point that it was only occassionally uncomfortable, but VERY distracting in having to watch nearly every single step.

What a fabulous day that was much more relaxing with a more relaxed attitude about others and not covering up!

Keep it up Gary, and keep sharing your experiences!!!

        Gary and Motorcity Nude,

It is great to hear of your experience. When I am seeking nude time in a normally textile area,I will elect to find areas where few people congregate. Second, if I encounter someone while hiking a trail, I will slip the shorts on to avoid a nasty encounter or worst yet, being banned by the authorities from using the local national park due to offensive behavior. Being an Ohioan and watching our state recede into deeper conservatism on many fronts, I will not risk the encounters with others hoping for a positive outcome.

I am very happy for you both though and wish you much continued success to enjoy nature nude!

Nude fishing. It just doesn't get better than that.
I also have a favourite spot on our local harbour, where I go with my wife and son and fish nude off the rocks for snapper.
Haven't had any bad feedback, just the odd astonished look and a few smiles.
          I love it

          Cheers KIWI

Well, those of you in Canada, Northern Territory, Lakes region, and Midwest, enjoy well you can as fall and winter is fast approaching where you won't be comfortable on the lake, dock or area nude due to the weather conditions for several months after September.

Yes, we Canadians are jealous of you Californians that enjoy warm temperatures all year round.

The cold weather here certainly cuts the risk of public nudity.

I believe that in general people at cottages, rural and lake front properties are generally more sympathetic and accepting of casual nudity then city-folk might be. After all, skinny-dipping is a widely popular activity.

The relative isolation or privacy, and the closeness to nature, and the common lack of air-conditioning or running water in more rustic settings, all contribute to a more relaxed and widely accepted dress code of shorts or bathing suits. Naturists know that slipping out of these is a very easy step past this.

Yess. Small ilustration. One very warm day this summer I had to work at the two places near Daugava river at city boarders, and between that jobs I had about 2,5 hour interruption. So, I just went to the riverside.

As I never wear the underwear I had only options to undress completely or sit there fully dressed. Therefore I find just one small micro-gulf with bushes both sides at the water side making plane view impossible. There I undressed and lied down as many people both sides over the bushes.

Something about dozen people run into this sand isle seeking for better place to tan, but seeing one naked man lieing just went off. Until ceme one married couple with children and wife as soons as children undressed completely too. Then some motorboats ceme to and fro, and one even put the anchor very near and drilled in us by eyes.

Yet all of them find nothing inherrently lewd, if I am doing ABSOLUTELY the same as all people around so my aims are clearer as clear. I just wonder that there was no complaint at all, so I get to my job back well rested and happy.

                    RE: Nude Pete:
""I believe that in general people at rural properties are generally more accepting of casual nudity then city-folk might""

Hmmm. Wonder if. Yes, them are really, by one side, nearer to accept PARTICULAR nudity, however them (at least at us) are much more "old-fashioned=Victorian minded" and far more un-tolerating any decline of those them think is right by themself.

The city people are more trained to shut the mouth and have only THINKING. While country people have on the mouth the same what in mind, and never shall loss an occassion to make a big "lesson" if they think its appropriate.

                      johny,

Your point is good. Rural people do tend to be more conservative in their thinking. But because of the reasons I just mentioned, that particular aspect (casual nudity) is less looked down on, then it is by city people who have less exposure to it.

I would be inclined to say that if i knew i were in the boundaries of my property, that i would do what i liked but like with loud music, you cant help what others around here so a fence would likely be necessary.
