  • Finally did some freehiking, loved it.

The wife and I went to Rocky Mountain National Park over the weekend and I finally got in some freehiking time this year. The day was perfect, we set out on the trail around 9:00 in the morning and only saw a few people on the 3.3 miles to the falls. Here are some things I learned.

1: Next time bring a sarong, it's much easier to put on than shorts if someone comes along.

2: Keep moving or the flies will bite.

3: Watch the brush on the way by. Scratches have new meaning freehiking.

4: The wife is now convinced that I am crazy.

5: The warm sun feels great when hiking.

6: Sweaty butt crack? Not without shorts to amplify the suns heat. The airflow probably helps too.

7: Backpacks leave a funny tanline.

8: It's easier to find out from returning hikers if someone else is on the trail on the way in.

9: Returning hikers lie, or 3 groups of returning hikers were hidden to them.

10: The trail back will have a lot more kids on it in the middle of the day than in the early morning on the way up.

All in all a great 6.6 mile hike, about 1.5 miles of it nude, the rest with shorts only.

I finally have an avatar to add to my profile, let's see if it comes out OK.

Sounds like a great day! I've only done it once and it was fantastic, especially sweat management.

I absolutely love to go hiking in the nude. Much easier to find a remote area to go nude hiking than it is to find a place for nude biking.

One time the person seeemed upset but said nothing. The other time, no problem.

            Hi All

Been hiking nude for several years now, mostly in VT. Five of us did a nude hike on the Appalachian Trail, nude from parking lot to parking lot, about 9.5 miles in length. We stopped at a pond for a swim also. Along the way about 12 people saw us The only coment was "Tis the day to hike nude" from an elderly couple.

Welcome to the world of freehiking , I quit adding but estimate I've nude hiked over 4000 miles in the last 10 years . It's something that has to be experienced to fully under stand how wonderful it feels,I just did a four day 31 mile hike in June also camped nude and didn't meet anyone had a great time. Good hiking to all .Ron

                Hi Binco
Good to hear you had a good time.
Have done only a minor bit of nude hiking, even with my textile wife.
Looking forward to doing more of it.
                Hey the avatar looks great.

I know of a guy in Mass that goes freehiking allot in Vt and NH. Here in Va there are very few places, at least in the Richmond area.

I am heading out for some wilderness camping later this week. Hopefully I will get in some freehiking while I am there. The long range forecast is not the warmest however.

I've only been able to freehike a handful of times, but I absolutely love it. It's just a wonderfully free and comfortable feeling.

Earlier this summer a friend took us freehiking near Yosemite National Park. The only person we met was a Ranger. We said, "Hi." She said, "Hi." Then we all continued on our way.

Nude hiking is legal on federal lands in isolated areas where there is a reasonable expectation that no one will be offended (a crowded parking lot doesn't qualify). As long as no one has complained, there is no offense. If someone complains, a Ranger will order you to get dressed. If you comply, there is no offense. It only becomes an offense if you refuse to get dressed when so ordered by an appropriate authority.

We visit Yosemite National Park every year. I've only observed it once, but my understanding is that there's quite a lot of nude hiking done in the more remote portions of the park. I assume that's true of all the national parks that offer the needed isolation.

A few years ago in Yosemite we had some problems that delayed us on our hike to the top of Half Dome, and we didn't get back out until 2:00 a.m. Just before we got back to the road our party was passed by two couples who were hiking nude. After they were well ahead of us one of the men in our party commented, "You never know when you'll see bears (bares) in Yosemite." No one cared about the nighttime nudity, though truthfully we were all too exhausted to care much about anything.

Indeed. I've done a lot of nude hiking in national parks and national forests in several western states. It's been my experience that nobody cares if a naked hiker walks past. Rangers really don't want to deal with complaints and won't unless the complainer is really angry and the nudist is near a road or parking lot. Rangers have a lot of other work to do and are wasting their time going around to tell someone to put their clothes on. Only if somoene is naked in a campground or parking lot, and several people complain, will they even go tell you to put on clothes. Rangers say that few of the complainers will show up to testify in court, and the case gets tossed for lack of evidence, so they don't want to issue citations even in the most flagrant violations unless you are flaunting in campgrounds in front of rangers.

On numerous occasions I've left my clothes in my car or camp, and left naked right from there. The more naked hikers that the clothed people see the more we become "normal" on trails.

                            Keep bare

                            Bob

I have had the USFS Rangers here in Calif tell me where the best skinny dipping places are. So for me the order of the day when up in the High Sierra's of Calif. is freehiking, nude Jeeping, nude canoeing and skinny dipping.

                              No one cares up there.
