• Ideas on desensitizing the public

OK, Rik started the previous topic and now I am going to ask for specific ideas on how we can get more notoritety in the media spotlight. And it is going to be the media that can be one of our biggest allies in desensitizing the public.

I have some suggestions. If there could ever be enough money put together, sponsor a sporting event. Possibilities include a golf tournament. If a naturist club or org. ever wanted to, they could purchase enough land to create a professional golf course, make it CO, and make a big enough purse to get in some of the higher profile players. Maybe sponsor a car in NASCAR, NHRA, or the European assns.

A while ago, there was a suggestion for a picnic-type get-together or a carnival style fair, possible CO or just clothed where info could be passed out.

Who can come up with other suggestions? I'm going to guess that a party at stu's is out of the question

OK Bob, here's a suggestion for openers. Write to mainstream travel publications such as Lonely Planet, Rough Guide etc (do you have those in the States?) and request that they incorprate a section in each of their travel guides for the naturist traveller just as they currently do for the gay and lesbian traveller.

I'll try and come up with some more but it's midnight here and right now I need some sleep!

I have an idea that's been bouncing around in my head for about a month now and it's about time to put it to work.

Since nude recreation supposedly is a 400 million dollar industry, wouldn't it be economically feasible to set aside small portions of RV parks for C/O RVers? I'm sure that if were known that these spaces were available the RV park industry would definitely benefit as well all traveling nudists. After all, money talks.

I belong to a group here in San Diego called the Camping Bares and every earth day we have a booth and pass out literature about naturism. The thinking being that the type of people who would attend a event like earth day would be more receptive to naturism. This is a clothed event in a city park.

I also know that up in Oregon near Eugene they have a sort of fair every year, I believe on the summer solstice, and it is clothing optional.

Nude fun runs have been popular of late. I have seen landed clubs sponser these and I have heard of radio personalities sponsering them. They even do it across the city of San Francisco as a part of the, "Bay to Breakers," race.

Nude vacations booked through special nude travel agencies have garnered a bit of attention. Also nude flights to nude resort locations, nude cruises and even the nude bridge in Palm Springs got quite a bit of free publicity.

I think just getting the word out there to the general public that we are a bunch of normal individuals who just happen to enjoy being naked. The more we can do to reduce the stygma of being, "found out," to be a nudist the more we advance our cause. To this end local groups can sponser events to inform the public so to speak.

Yes, we need more positive write-ups in mainstream press. Travel magazines would be a great place for regular articles, especially those for the outdoors living. And advertising in magazines such as CondeNast Traveler would also do a lot.

I would also love to see a commercial for a nudist venue or org sometime on the TV.

I've been pondering this very topic for a long time, it's interesting to note that I'm not alone in my thought process. So, here's a thought I had. What if the various local clubs were to (each in thier respective communities, of course)hold some type of fund raiser (i.e: garage sale, car wash, bake sale, etc.)and donated the proceeds to a local well known charitable organization? Such activities often garner media attention, both print and T.V. There'd be very little cost involved, and it would get the name of the club spread within it's community as a group of caring individuals instead of the swinger/sex club stereotype most people visualize when they hear about nudists. Most charities will in return offer a plaque as thanks and as recognision of the club. AANR, INA, TNS etc. could get a piece of the spotlight by having representitives on hand at the donation presentations. And in larger communities, or within a state where more than one club exists, one club could offer a challenge to another to raise more for a given charity and get local media to support the challenge by spreading the word throughout the community. O.K, maybe I'm nuts, but I think it would work. I'm thinking of sending this idea to the AANR office, just to see what thier response would be.

I remember a very hip television commercial for the Caribbean island of St. Maartin. They had a bouncy song with an island beat and quick shots of breath-taking island views. The song continues,"A touch of French, a touch of Dutch and...Ooh la la!" Ooh la la! because then you see a lovely young topless woman (viewed from the back).

What a wonderful way to let American tourists know that a little bit of European body freedom is available to them in the sunny Caribbean!

Where are all the sophisticated upbeat commercials for nudist resorts? We still seem to be so hush-hush about fun places like Lake Como or Cypress Cove. I don't get it.

My idea when I was trying to start a non-landed club was to do fund raisers for local charities, like Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Fund, Food Banks, etc. I also thought about participating (clothed, of course) in Habitat For Humanity projects. This would definitely present a more positive image of nudists to the area folks.

I have also, on my own, become something of a 'celebrity' on a local radio station, emailing and calling in every so often with nudist insight and updates...that has met with politeness, if not total acceptance. They actually look forward to my calls...sometimes!

A few years back, I remember seeing something on the local tv news about a nudist group getting together to donate blood. The local blood mobile went to some location near or in Las Vegas and the people donated blood in the nude. The reporter interviewed several of them.

This would not only help the nudist cause but would also help the community by supplying needed blood.

Many people here have expressed concern about others finding out about their lifestyle. I am completely open about it, and have found that many people are at least curious if not actual practitioners. Some folks may have problems with others knowing, but I believe that being more open with those we know is the best way to promote naturism.

It's a bit 'chicken and egg'. Many people don't want to be open about naturism until it becomes more aceptable to be open about it. But it won't be more acceptable until more people are open about it.

I guess what we're trying to do here is to find painless ways of breaking the cycle.

Cypress Cove has been doing radio commercials for very many years and Lake Como and Paradise run ads in the local papers.

Como also tapes shows of their tennis and volleyball games and have a website where you can pay to see them.

I suppose that Turtle Lake Resort in south-central Michigan still has large billboards on the highways advertising that naturist resort.
