Every summer we take our son on a family getaway associated with his birthday, usually camping. This summer we surprised both him and ourselves. Last December he got on a kick of saying we ought to try nude recreation this summer for our getaway. I told him “in his dreams” not telling him that both his mother and I had enjoyed skinny dipping on the family farm and a nude beach a few times. To make a long story short, for his 17th birthday we told him we were going to surprise him. He kept asking “are we going to go to a nude beach” and I kept telling him “no way.” I was telling the truth as my wife and I had decided to forgo the beach and go camping at a nude resort in nearby Georgia some friends had told us about.
The funniest part was that he did not realize what we were doing until we pulled up to the pool/registration area at the campground and he saw everyone naked. It was pure silence from the back seat of the SUV until I heard this very quiet “oh my god.” I responded by saying “I told you we were not going to a nude beach.”
In short, there were a lot of humorous moments (like getting naked with mom and dad the first time) but it turned out to be one of the best family outings we could have had. I feel like we really got to know our son this weekend as we spent a lot of time just talking about things and being a family. He even made the comment that it wasn’t what he thought it would be like and that nudity and sex were two different things. On the way home he asked if we still had to wear clothes around the house and both his mom and I said wear only what you are comfortable with.
I am sure we will do this again as son figured out how to put up a couple of pieces of lattice work on our deck and make it clothing optional. He helped, and last night he and I sat on the deck in our birthday suits and watched a thunderstorm roll in.
So if you haven’t tried family nudity, it is not a scary as you may think.
