  • Freehiking Report

    Hi Friends,

Last Saturday morning, I determined to go freehiking for the first time this summer. I found a great area in the Cherokee National Forrest in North Georgia.

This area is not used very much. There is an old primative campground with no facilities. On this day, as I drove around the camping area, I found one man with only a bicycle.

There are many forrest service roads on these mountains. I drove along some that took me to the tops of the mountains, but there are no developed overlooks. I did run across someone who was camping up there in a converted mini-school bus. I did not have the opportunity to speak with it's owner.

I finally found a service road that was closed. This road was graveled for what seemed like several miles.

I got out of my truck, dropped my shorts, put on my Camelbak water supply and took my hiking staff and set off. I walked along this road for about 25 minutes. All along the way, I could hear the wildlife in the trees around me. There were several areas where I could get a glimpse of the valley between the hills, but no wide vistas were available.

On this trip up the road, I did see evidence of someone else having passed this way, possibly just earlier this summer. There were two beer bottles and one beer can. Next time, I will carry a trash bag with me to collect debris left by others.

After hiking for 25 minutes, I turned and hiked back to my truck. It was a wonderful experience to be completely nude without a worry at all. In fact, I plan on leaving in just a few minutes to go explore other service roads in the same area.

I can comfortably walk a mile in about 15 minutes. So, I am guessing I walked about 2.5 miles last week.

Today is much cooler than last week. There is cloud cover and scattered showers moved through last night. This is a sharp contrast to last week when the late afternoon temps reached near the 100°F mark.

I encourage others to share their freehiking experiences here as well. I will add to this one sometime this weekend.

    Cheers,
    JRo.

I think that freehiking tops almost anything else that can be enjoyed in the nude, except sex of course!!!!

Yeah, nothing beats freehiking as a nudist activity.

I go at least once a week, find a two trac fire road, drive in a mile or so.....Hike up and view the valley below.

Where I live there is a section of road called "The Grade". Huge flat pooltable rock slabs line the road on one side, a large drop off on the other.

Last Wednesday, while hiking upto the lookout I saw a Doe and her fawn, then a Bull Elk. Once up on top, the view of the valley, ending 1200' below is wonderful.

This is how I recharge my batterys, and why I moved to Montana.

Freehiking is the way to go.

I plan on being in the Black Hills of SD soon for a week. I plan on doing a bit of freehiking there. There are many great trails and game paths, with a GPS unit, a compass and some common sense, you can roam at will and then go right back to your source. If anyone is interested, I would enjoy the company.

I Freehiked the Bad Lands last fall. The Black Hills area is fantastic. Have fun, watch out for the Bison, and give up a report.

                  Freehiking report 7/22/2006

Saturday, I again went to my new hiking venue.

This time, I parked at the campground and proceeded back out of the campground to a forrest service road just outside of the campground proper. I took this road for approximately 2.5 miles, give or take.

As I started up the incline on the mountain, I could look down upon part of the campground. It was then that I noticed that someone was indeed camping this weekend. I did hear voices, but saw no one.

I continued my hike up the mountain. It was a rather steamy morning, it had rained the night before, but not much. As the morning progressed, the humidity got worse.

I noticed that there were not many birds singing or sounds of any other wildlife. It must have been because it was overcast and threatening rain. It did begin to rain a little bit, and at first I had a bit of concern. Then I realized that it doesn't matter, I am NUDE! The rain never did materialize.

About 40 minutes into my hike, I decided to turn around. By this time, the clouds had begun to part and the birds were beginning to sing. About 3 min after I turned around, I heard a cyote howl in the distance. This was followed by howls by several other cyotes. I picked up the pace. I do believe that I went down the road faster than I went up. I wasn't very concerned, but I did not have any desire to meet up with any wildlife with sharp teeth. Altough I had my hiking staff, I did not think it to be much of a defense.

It was a wonderful hike. I heard many birds, saw the sunlight filtering through the dense canopy, thinking about the nature around me and how natural it was for me to be there in it.

The only problem I encountered on the hike was a bit of an irritation to my scrotum. Has anyone experienced this? There seemed to be a bit of friction between my legs that caused this the longer I hiked nude.

Once I got to the bottom of the road, I returned to the campground area and began a slow walk around the loop to cool down. By this time, the occupants of the campsite had left for other activities, sure to return later in the day.

When I returned to my truck, I took my time to do some cool-down stretches, fully enjoying nature and the fresh mountain air.

In addition to the freehike, I drove nude all the way to the campground and all the way home. A great end to a fantastic freehike.

Just in from a hike, very warm but with high winds at the top of the grade. Must be the heat rising from the valley floor. Hiked upon 2 does and 3 fawns.

What a great way to end the day.

If you've never freehiked, get out and try it.

                      Freehiking Report August 5, 2006

Today, my hike started out pretty good. I returned to the same venue as my last two hikes. I had expected to have a hiking buddy, but he could not make it at the last minute.

I parked in the campground as I did the last time. I started out with just my hiking stick planning to take a warm-up lap or two around the campgroud. There are about 16 unimproved campsites in this particular campground. No ameneties at all.

I found only one camper this morning. As I came upon his tent, he popped out of his tent. "Here I was, getting my shorts on, and you don't have anything on." We went on to have a nice conversation. He is a closet nudist, only going nude when camping. However, he proved to be a bit more wise than myself, by putting on his shorts.

As we were standing there talking, we heard a car coming along the drive. What I saw, I thought was a man, but apparently turned out to be a woman. This becomes important later. I did not bother to move from the driver's view, and waved cordially as the driver's face turned away.

I returned to my truck to get my Camelbak water backpack and my cap/sunglasses. I next set out to hike up the fire road near the campground. This time, I took the road that forks to the left.

My freehike was just perfect. Clear blue sky, birds chirping and bugs buzzing. Then it happened, after about 20 minutes, I heard a vehicle coming. I was toast. I had nowhere to go. A steep drop off to the left, and a steep wall to my right. No shorts. I had thought that since this was such a remote location, I would not need to bother with shorts.

As the car approached, I tried to make the best of the situation and just smile and wave. The driver rolled up his window and drove on by.

I continued on for about another 15 minutes. I guessed that I had covered about 2 miles up the mountain. At that time, I turned around and headed back.

Again, after about 15 minutes, I heard a car again. Oh no. It was the same car that had passed me earlier. The kicker, it was followed by a county sheriff's car. OMG!

Well, as you would imagine, they were looking for me. The deputy got out of the car, and he was quite angry. He said, "What do you think you are doing?" I simply said that I was enjoying hiking. He could not understand why I was nude. He asked if I had ID, clothes, etc, to which I replied that all of that was in my truck. He had already checked out my truck and knew my name.

Well, he insisted that I get in his car and he would take me to my truck. It was terribly hot in the backseat of that sqad car and I began to sweat the most I have ever done in my life. I actually left puddles of sweat on his vinyl seat.

When we got back to my truck, he asked for ID as I put on my shorts and t-shirt. He said, "Of all the things I have seen, this takes them all." He just could not believe that anyone would want to walk nude on a mountain. I explained that there were 3 nudist resorts in our state. He did tell me that if I had been walking down main street, he would have to arrest me, but since I was in a remote location, he would let me go. I promised to be more considerate in the future.

The original report to 911 had been called in by a woman. Either the person who first drove by the campsite was a woman, or if it were a man, he went home and told his wife what he saw, then she called. Next, the hunters who had passed me as they came down the mountain, found the deputy at the campground and told him about seeing me and led him up the mountain to find me.

I was amazed at the deputy's reaction. I was further amazed at the reaction of the hunters. I figured that if they were outdoorsmen, they had to experience some type of nudity outdoors themselves. I never expected them to turn me in. After all, it was very obvious that I was just hiking.

*sigh* Not everybody is so forgiving on the mountain trail.

Great report, you handled it very well. Must be the clear thinking that comes from Freehiking.

You must have been the talk of the station that day!

Great report, and good that the deputy didn't try to haul you through the courts, looks like he has SOME common sense, although his lack of understanding for the sheer pleasure that freehiking can bring is a little disconcerting.

There is a web site and forum dedicated to freehiking, its called the 'Secret Naturist Society' if anyone is interested, you can exchange idea's and experiences with people all over the world who like freehiking.
