Hi Friends,
Last Saturday morning, I determined to go freehiking for the first time this summer. I found a great area in the Cherokee National Forrest in North Georgia.
This area is not used very much. There is an old primative campground with no facilities. On this day, as I drove around the camping area, I found one man with only a bicycle.
There are many forrest service roads on these mountains. I drove along some that took me to the tops of the mountains, but there are no developed overlooks. I did run across someone who was camping up there in a converted mini-school bus. I did not have the opportunity to speak with it's owner.
I finally found a service road that was closed. This road was graveled for what seemed like several miles.
I got out of my truck, dropped my shorts, put on my Camelbak water supply and took my hiking staff and set off. I walked along this road for about 25 minutes. All along the way, I could hear the wildlife in the trees around me. There were several areas where I could get a glimpse of the valley between the hills, but no wide vistas were available.
On this trip up the road, I did see evidence of someone else having passed this way, possibly just earlier this summer. There were two beer bottles and one beer can. Next time, I will carry a trash bag with me to collect debris left by others.
After hiking for 25 minutes, I turned and hiked back to my truck. It was a wonderful experience to be completely nude without a worry at all. In fact, I plan on leaving in just a few minutes to go explore other service roads in the same area.
I can comfortably walk a mile in about 15 minutes. So, I am guessing I walked about 2.5 miles last week.
Today is much cooler than last week. There is cloud cover and scattered showers moved through last night. This is a sharp contrast to last week when the late afternoon temps reached near the 100°F mark.
I encourage others to share their freehiking experiences here as well. I will add to this one sometime this weekend.
Cheers,
JRo.
