TO : Naturists and other concerned citizens

    Dear Naturist,

This is an Update from the Naturist Action Committee concerning the Auburn State Recreational Area in the state of California.

Progress continues toward drafting a comprehensive General Plan for the Auburn SRA, which includes traditional clothing-optional sites along the American River. Naturists remain an integral part of the planning process.

    PUBLIC WORKSHOP #2 - MAY 30, 2007

Last evening's event in Auburn was the second of three planned public workshops. Once again, naturists have made a significant showing. Naturists, including those who were responding to NAC's Action Alert of May 23, 2007, made up approximately 15 percent of the diverse group of participants.

NAC thanks you for your response and your participation.

    WHAT IS NAC DOING?

By phone, e-mail, surface mail and face-to-face meetings, the Naturist Action Committee remains in continual contact with California Parks officials on the matter of the Auburn SRA and other important California issues.

NAC board member Allen Baylis traveled to Auburn specifically to participate in Wednesday evening's workshop session. While there, he met again with Auburn Sector Superintendent Jay Galloway, Gold Fields District Superintendent Scott Nakaji and Project Manager Jim Micheaels. Those meetings, though brief, were cordial and productive. CA Parks officials at Auburn SRA have confirmed to NAC their intention to manage FOR nude recreation in traditional areas. This is a huge reversal from just a year ago, when those same officials were making plans to prohibit nudity on the American River.

The workshop itself was a success and included the appropriate involvement of naturists in the planning process.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

In conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the California Department of Parks & Recreation is continuing development of the joint General Plan / Resource Management Plan for the Auburn State Recreational Area. Naturists have made themselves a significant part of that process, and it is essential that we continue our high level of involvement.

There will be a third public workshop, the date for which has not yet been set.

Meanwhile, California Parks officials have committed that responsible clothing-optional use at traditional sites will be handled according to the Department's Cahill Policy, which permits conditional nude use in state parks. NAC's Allen Baylis has written an excellent article on the Cahill Policy and California laws addressing nudity. You will find that article in the current issue (26.4) of N magazine, published by The Naturist Society.

WHAT IS NAC ASKING YOU TO DO?

This is an update. The Naturist Action Committee is not asking for your specific action at this time. Please watch for future NAC Action Alerts, Advisories and Updates on this important topic.

PLEASE HELP NAC TO CONTINUE HELPING NATURISTS!

The Naturist Action Committee is the volunteer nonprofit political adjunct to The Naturist Society. NAC exists to advance and protect the rights and interests of naturists throughout North America. Fighting for the clothing-optional recreational use of public land is expensive. To do its job, NAC relies entirely on the voluntary generosity of supporters like you.
