I agree that nude is NOT lewd. I also believe that there are people who believe that, but why is it that the lawmakers make laws that will pretty much land you in court or hit you with fines for being nude. To the lawmakers, nude is lewd, and that is why politics are blind.

Unfortunately, (here in the U.S. anyway) the prevailing trends in lawmaking seem to be: If a certain small percentage of the general population can't conduct themselves within reason (with respect to whatever issue is at hand) then we must pass laws preventing said behavior. In plain English, a few kids skating on sidewalks can't respect the adult pedestrians who also use the sidewalk therefore we "must" make it illegal for anyone to skate on a sidewalk. It would appear that our so called "lawmakers" really get into thier work, and don't dissapoint, they put so many new laws on the books evry session, it's no wonder that even the Police have trouble determining what's legal and what isn't. stu, using nudeM's definition, it's nice to know that you don't think that people don't automatically associate nudity with obscenity.
Gary, there has to be a better way to phrase that. Simple nudity is simply not lewd.

I don't believe that people do automatically associate nude with lewd.
I get nude once a day for about three of four minutes when I take a shower - that's not lewd.

Yes but stu thats in the privacy of your own home, nobody can see you and its only for a few minutes. That doesnt really count. We are talking about full nudity in public, where people can see you and where you do it as part of your normal lifestyle. We just dont see simple nudity as being lewd conduct. Its your actions that determine weither youre lewd, not the nudity itself.

Thats why the laws need to say that you need to be commiting some other lewd action when youre nude before the police can do anything. Nudity in and of itself is not lewd and doesnt warrant ticketing or arrest.

I agree with NudeM on this one. You can be lewd with out being Nude. There are lots of people who are arrested for lewd acts and it had nothing to do with their level of dress or lack there of. MOST (yes this is my opinion) lewd acts are NOT committed by (true) nudists.
I hear reports in the newspaper about some pervert committing lewd acts on a child, where the child was the one who was undressed (read raped). In this case who was the lewd person, the molester who was dressed or the child who was innoccent. That guestion is open to anyone.
No nude is NOT lewd. Acts committed(mostly, again my opinion) by NON nudists are the lewd ones.
just my 2.4 cents

lewd, as described in Webster's: "1. evil, wicked 2 a: sexually unchaste or licentious b: obscene, salacious"
Pretty well describes what lewd means. To me, it does not infere that simple nudity in no way, could be construed as being lewd. It is the "lewd" actions that "can" happen while in a state of undress that can be deemed improper.

You've all heard the expression: Nude is not lewd.
I think that we need to expand the comment somewhat to emphasize the distinction between the state of being nude and actions when nude.
So, we should modify the expression to be: A nude body is not lewd conduct.
