    DATE: September 15, 2017
    SUBJECT: Meredith
    "Dick" Springer (1930-2017)
    TO: All naturists

I'm saddened to report that our friend Meredith Nehrbas "Dick" Springer has died. Dick was a board member of NAC and NEF at the time of his death, a position he had held since 2010. Dick was 87 years old.

Dick's wife Ellie passed away this past May, and Dick's own health had been poor recently. He died on August 26 at a hospice in Scarborough, Maine. Services were private.

Dick Springer was an avid naturist who recalled having been nude in the 1940s on the beach in front of the lighthouse on Fire Island, New York, close to 20 years before the area was made a part of Fire Island National Seashore. Before Lee Baxandall's Free Beach Documentation Center became The Naturist Society, Dick organized an affiliated special interest group for outdoor hiking. Dick was an "early adopter" of The Naturist Society, becoming a member in 1980, the year of the organization's creation. He was an Area Representative for the Naturist Action Committee before he became a board member.

    Dick will be greatly missed.
    ______________

With permission, here is the family's obituary for Dick, as it will appear in tomorrow's issue of the Portland Press Herald.

    Meredith Nehrbas Springer, 87

Meredith ("Dick") Springer died Saturday, August 26. 2017, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, from urothelial cancer. He and his late wife Ellie, who died in May, lived on Peaks Island from 1994 to 2011, when they moved to Piper Shores.

Dick was born February 14, 1930, the first son of C. Meredith and Jeanne Nehrbas Springer. He and his brother Jim grew up in Hempstead, Long Island, New York. He was an Eagle Scout, and after two years at Hempstead High School he was a scholarship student at the Phillips Exeter Academy. He received an AB from Harvard in 1951, followed by an AM from Harvard and a PhD from NYU in mathematics. He served in the Army for two years.

Dick worked as a mathematician at Bell Telephone Laboratories, MIT and Airborne Instruments Laboratory, where he morphed into a systems analyst and programmer in the early days of computer development. He later worked on sophisticated computer projects at General Microwave Corporation, Technicon Corporation and Materials Research Corporation. After moving to Peaks Island from New York he served as a rural letter carrier in the Portland area.

Dick was a regular author of letters to the editor of the Press-Herald, and worked to support acceptance of people without religious belief and those with non-mainstream views.

Dick is survived by his son Russell Springer, a school teacher in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, his grandson Indiana, his brother, his stepdaughters Amy and Sharon Etzweiler and their children.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Piper Shores Memorial Fund, 15 Piper Road Scarborough ME 04074, or to Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 U.S. Route 1 Scarborough ME 04074.
