Hey. I've been trimming my pubic hair for a while, but tonight I decided to shave off a lot of the extra hair. Then I got going, and I kept doing it, the next thing you know, im totally bald. ive got a question...ive shaved a little bit before, and it always had big red bumps for a few days. i rubed lubriderm on it. how long do you think i'll have the bumps for? and if i continue to shave, will the red bumps stop coming? how long will i have to shave before they stop coming? thanks!

Life is too short, even though it is the longest thing we will ever know, so go have fun.
"Let us look at each oher without mistrust, meet each other without fear, talk with each other without surrendering principle" by Pope John Paul XXIII
"Our flag is red, white and blue, but our nation is a rainbow--red, yellow, brown, black and white--and we're all precious in God's sight" by Jesse Jackson
You need to get a better razor. I found that when I used an old blade or a razor that wasn't new (straight out of the package) then I get the red bumps too. Don't shave everyday either. Once a week or so is fine. Me I do so about once a quarter unless I am going somewhere (ie. a nudist club). Baby powder also works to help with the bumps, along with nothing on top of the freshly shaved area. Anything that touches the area of new growth can cause irratation and that is what the bumps are caused from. They go away after a day or so, so don't worry to much about it. Just shave a couple of days or so before you know that you are going someplace and you will be fine. Hope this helps.

Stephen,
First of all, welcome aboard!!
Second, I'll tell you what I do...in explicit detail. Take notes, there will be an exam following.
Third, I am also a shaver, except not the pubic or armpit hair. I use a regular razor. I use a Schick 4 blade, whatever it's called. I use White Rain, Strawberry scent shampoo to shave with. If you go to Wal*Mart, go to the section where they have the razors and, on the top shelf, are "baby blades" that women use. I use that for "crack hair." Next to it, in a little bottle, is oil that says something like it replaces regular shaving cream, gel...etc. I use that on the base of my penis, sac and crack (hey! that rhymes!!). I use the shampoo in excess (it is really cheap stuff, works great for me).
Fourth, after you dry off, use either hand lotion on everything shaved. At night, use vaseline on everything, though it'll make you kinda warm sleeping. Also, there is a product that I had used in the past for my hands, which is the Udder Balm, or whatever it is. It comes in a black and white container, may be a squeeze bottle. It is greaseless and has been working great for me.
Now, I started shaving when I joined here (see date at left). I still get some bumps, which I just have to remember to use the Udder stuff everyday. I try to shave either every day or every other...depends if I'm going to the gym or not.
In addition...ahem, are you still there?? click on my name and view all posts dealing with shaving to get even more details. I even shave myself while lying on my back, balancing a medium-sized mirror with my feet. Shaving the back is tricky, but, I don't get everything...try to anyway.
Good luck! If you need to know more, like I said, click on my name (trolls stay away) or pm me.

Here's some tips:
[*]As was mentioned, use a good, sharp razor, such as a "Mach-3". If you use a disposable, you will only scrape layers off of your skin, allowing bacteria to get in, and causing a lot of inflammation.
[*]Apply aqueous iodine solution ("Providine", or WalMart's generic brand) before and after shaving. This will kill most microbes, and doesn't hurt or cause inflammation.
[*] Avoid shaving against the growth direction of the hair - this will also open the skin and allow bacteria to enter your epidermis. If you must shave against the grain, use only light pressure.
[*]Do not apply moisturizer unless you have very dry skin - the mineral oil in moisturizer lotions creates a very hospitable environment for bacteria.
[*]Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear, or none at all.
The pubic area is a place that bacteria find to be very comfortable to live in. The problem is that there are a lot of productive sweat glands in the pubic area, and there is generally a lack of good ventilation there. This moist, warm, ph-balanced area makes a great petri dish. Add some fresh broken skin, and you get lots of happy colonies. The primary bacteria strain is staphylococcus. Staph bacteria exists normally on the surface of most people's skin. It's when you allow it to get under the skin that it can cause problems.
The inflammation, caused by breaking the skin by shaving (folliculitis) also enhances the hospitable environment for bacteria by interrupting the skin's normal metabolic processes. This is why you want to avoid inflammation as much as possible (sharp blade, light pressure), and keep the bacteria count in check (good hygiene, iodine). I have been using this method for years, and I rarely ever get bumps anymore. On the rare occasion that I do, I apply colorless iodine (iodine-based - does sting on open bumps). In a day or two, the bump is gone.
If your skin is not extremely sensitive to chemical depilatories, this can be a better method. It removes the hair below the skin without breaking the skin, and the ends of the hairs are soft or very fine, so they don't ingrow. And an additional benefit, the extremely high ph of depilatories kills staph bacteria.

Pete,
The use of heavy moisturizers, and especially vaseline, will really help bacteria to grow unless the skin is first disinfected with an iodine-containing product. It also interferes with the normal exfoliation and elimination of waste compounds from the skin. I am speaking from personal experience. Using heavy mineral oil or petrolatum is a major cause of sebaceous cysts (the type of bumps that acne is comprised of). Not everyone will experience this problem by but most will.

hello and welcome! i'm a smoothie too! better not shave as often at first. the skin has to become conditioned to it just as your face did. i don't use lotions as some contain ingredients that burn. i put vasoline all over the area after shaving in shower. keeps it looking and feeling smooth.a little bit goes a long way!

Stephen,
This can be really tricky... everyone gave great advice, but I feel like just because it necessarily works for you DOESN'T mean it will work for everyone!
I have especially sensitive skin everwhere... so shaving "down there" with a regular blade (and believe me I know, I first started doing it when I was 14) for me causes awful razor burn (red bumps) leading to inflamed ingrown hairs. I also absolutely can't shave more than once a week or I further irritate my skin - it's awful. Even having tried all the remedies mentioned above, my skin has a terrible reaction, it's just too sensitive there.
If I am especially careful and use "Tend Skin" (available at Sephora.com, but very expensive) consistently, this cuts back on the bumps/ingrown hairs. But, it's has an unpleasant scent like rubbing alcohol and I find it to be just too much trouble in general.
So I'm gonna let you in on another option which has worked well for me the last few years.
I bought an electric razor "beard trimmer," from CVS - a fairly good quality one that has several attatchments. Use this to get as close a shave as possible. Then I use a razor that is available online... I forget where I found it but I know a friend recently bought it from the playboy catalog online store... some classy name like "cat" (replace with the word that would be deleted here) shaver. It is specifically for stuble only. IT IS AMAZING!!! It gets JUST as close as shaving with a regular blade, but you can not get any nicks, cuts, or ingrown hairs. You will be super smooth AND as a bonus, your hair grows back in softer than it does with a regular blade - no sharp scratchy hairs (yuck!) like you get from regular shaving. As long as you keep up with this every day, you will never have to use the regular beard trimmer again. This will keep you maintained, and it is quick, easy, and PAINLESS! Of course, if you take a few/days weeks off from shaving, just repeat the process with the beard trimmer.
If you want the exact name of the razor, you can PM me later and I'll look it up later when I get home from work (can't look something like that up here at work, I would probably get flagged!).
Of course, I am really lazy and am getting tired of even this, so now I am considering lazor hair removal which is permanent. I have a great doctor who does this, the only thing holding me back is the cost.
Good luck, hope this helped!

I'm smooth, too, but I use (get ready to say, "Ouch!") an epilator.
I'm not naturally very hairy so It's mainly use it on the pubic region.
I do still get bumps but not nearly as bad as I did when I used a razor.
I've tried countless remedies but I haven't tried Always Nude Mike's idea and it makes a lot of sense. I will try it next time.
The main advantage of using the epilator is that you can go a week, two, or even longer before having to do it again. Also, you don't have stubble a few hours later.

I use something that sounds similar to what Tara mentioned. I bought mine from http://www.shavesmooth.com/ Mine is the Seiko Cleancut and it's worked fine. I'm thinking of upgrading to the rechargeable Body Bare.
Good luck!

I am glad the idea of electrics was brought up, because I neglected to mention that I often use a "microscreen" rechargeable shaver. I primarily use the electric for every-day use. I use the blade a couple of times a week for a closer shave, and to get the hair that is difficult to get with the electric. This allows any abrasions created by the blade a few days to heal, preventing inflammation. The other methods that I mentioned are still necessary when shaving. It sounds complicated, but I rarely spend more than a few minutes on any given day.
BTW, *DON'T* use a rotary type shaver, such as a Norelco. The slots are too large and allow admittance of soft scrotal or labial tissue to enter the cutting zone. The microscreen type of shavers have much smaller opening, allowing a safe shave (but remember to fully stretch the skin when shaving).

I have a friend of a friend (male) that swears by his Epilady. Even with the "pulling" type of epilators, skin breaks do occur, usually around the follicle. If you apply iodine solution before and after, you can prevent bacteria entering the breaks, and this should all but eliminate bumps.

as a shaver for about 20 years now, you get use to it. Although many of the post are great ideas and some i have not tryed, But the best advise is not to shave to often, and have a good razor that is sharp.
recently i've got past shaving, we purchased a electorlsis kit online and are going all the way. Perminant hair removal, while it has only been a short time and the hair has not gone yet, it definatly has changed the way it grow, its much softer now when it comes in and less thick, its taking a few times, i'm doing it once a week over the entire area and so far its been 3 treatments and its seeming to make a diffrence.
We looked at professional removal, but figured might as well save the money and do it our self.
Its something to look in to, no irritation no burn, and once it works like it should, no shaving ever again.
