You and several nudist friends are sitting in someone?s family room watching a movie on video. There is hot love scene and one of the men gets an erection, visible to all in the room. He ignores it, and after a few minutes it subsidies.

well, i've never been in this situation, since i have no nudist friends and i rarely have the time to watch a movie. if i was in this situation with a friend who got a woody during a movie and did not cover it up, he better be prepared for some teasing, because i tease my textile firends about everything. so if he wants to not cover up, he better expect some "glances" and teasing.

Gary,
Why are you so preoccupied with the sexual aspect of nudism?? I take it you don't subscribe to Rik's view that 'non-sexual' public nudity should be allowed anywhere, as it seems you think nudity is entirely sexual and, indeed, is your raison d'etre for practicing it!!

So what! An erection is a natural occurence in healthy males and would likely occur during a romantic scene in a film. If it did and someone rose to the occasion what would be the harm unless it was used to make a lewd statement of some kind. I say, here here for the unexpected! If a towel is handy make a tent or just ignore it and nature will send it back south in a while.

So it happens, what's the big deal? As long as that person stays seated and tries to conceal it (if possible) without making a specticle out of it, then so what? I have seen erections and they don't bother me. The persons who have them are more embarrassed than the ones who observe them. It's possible the person didn't have a towel handy and was embarrassed to get up to get one. I get them, and as stated, it is a natural among males. I fail to see any problems.

In answer to your question (as opposed to your speculation about my beliefs/motives), it's the scientist in me. We have a nudist group, and we have a polling capability -- a perfect opportunity to obtain the views of nudists. I also have a background in doing surveys.
There is a lot of confusion in people's minds about the relationship between nudity and sexuality. More than most, nudists are able to differentiate the two. By asking nudists questions about nudity and sexuality, it's possible to understand better how a population can keep nudity and sexuality appropriately separate.
Re this particular question. It is the rule at (private) nudist facilities and (public) clothing-optional beaches that erections should be hidden. These rules have been made by those in control of the facilities/beaches as a crude way of differentiating between nudity for its own sake and nudity for sexual purposes.
But what do nudists think about nudity and erections? Erections can result spontaneously from both non-sexual and sexual stimuli.
We know anecdotally (e.g. from lots of comments in these forums) that nudists are OK with visible erections resulting from non-sexual stimuli.
But what about visible erections caused by external sexual stimuli? My poll sets up a scenario where the stimulus is sexual, but comes from an external source (the movie). Are nudists OK with visible erections in this situation? Based on the results to date, the answer is yes (90/10).
I could do another poll where the sexual stimulus comes from the person himself, and ask if nudists are OK with this? However, I already know from forum comments that there would be a mix of responses (lewd / rude / OK, dude).
This poll tells us that nudists view "innocent" sexual responses as being acceptable in a nudist setting. In the fullness of time, when the general population comes around to concurring with the views of nudists, we could expect similar tolerance in public settings. (NOT!)

personally, an erection does not bother me unless the person is doing something with it in a public setting that might "intimidate" another person that they do not know. i also have no problem with sexually oriented nudity, as long as it is kept in "secluded" areas. for instance, sexual encounters between two consenting individuals in the wilderness where the area is not populated. who cares, except other animals. in another case, i was at an isolated, nearly empty nude beach and saw this couple sitting nearby. the guy was sitting with his towel covering his "parts" because his girlfriend was stroking him down there (she was not all over him, just discreetly pleasuring him). they were very discreet and no-one noticed (or cared, since i noticed but did not care). had i had kids back then and they saw the activity, i would have explained that sometimes this is how adults have fun and than redirected their attention to something else. i would not encourage this activity at a populated public nude beach, only because our society is still so puritanical. but in isolated areas, why not.
our society needs to get over its sexual hang-ups, let's focus our energy on natural nakedness and loose our puritanical philosophies.

My standard response to the erection issue:
In the same situation, watching a sexy/romantic movie, what if it's a female who gets the erection? It could be because of a chilly draft, or because of romantic response to the movie, or because someone sitting next to her accidentally brushed the side of her breast while reaching for the veggies and dip, or even because she laughed at a particularly funny segment and spewed cold soda down her chest. Should she then cover her breasts until the erection subsides?
Erectile tissue naturally engorges regularly. Erections happen. If you are bothered by the sight, don't look.
My 2 cents, YMMV!

When I posted this topic, I was staying at a clothing-optional B&B. My last night there, the owners invited me to watch TV with them in their family room.
We're all nude and watching some silly reality TV show, and I realize that I'm getting an erection. Nothing sexy on TV, no reason for it at all. It ratchets its way up the dial to Full, and I decide to ignore it, just like in the scenario in the post.
However, after a couple of minutes, I started feeling embarrassed, perhaps because there was no reason to have an erection. Despite the fact that my hosts couldn't see anything because of I'm sitting in an overstuffed armchair, I chickened out and leaned forward so that it was out of sight.
Now I'm more embarrassed at having hidden it than having had it.
Note: If my erection had been caused by something sexy on TV, as in the scenario, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have hidden it, because I would have had a reason for having it.
Gary
P.S. I swear that this was a coincidence -- when I posted this topic, I didn't anticipate their invitation to watch TV with them.
