I like the barbershop harmony sung in the musical, "Music Man", when they sing the song "Lida Rose". Also the song in this musical where some of the repeated rythmic words are "chick, chick, boom, boom" is a delightful riot, - both by sound and sight!
I have "Lida Rose" in my repertory along with other songs from musicals, plus many polkas etc. which I play on my electronic keyboard at nursing homes, fairs, parties, etc.
However my greatest pleasure in music is classical music, which I studied when I took piano lessons for seven years (and some viola lessons).
When I was about age 19 and in the Navy, they had a barbershop song contest at the base and I helped four WAVES (women navy personnel) to learn their parts to "Under the Bamboo Tree" and a couple other barbershop songs.
They were really the best, but they got the "booby prize" because I accompanied them on the piano, whereas, traditionally, they were to sing without instrumental accompanyment.
They were not very disappointed, as the booby prize was much better than first prize, in money value, and they liked them better than first prize.
I received my Barbershop virus injection back in '85 - now sing lead with 1 quartet (Treblesome, A Musical Disturbance) and I'm the Chapter music director.
I have a dream of getting a singing gig at Turtle Lake here in Michigan Now that could be a GREAT job
