  • Schoolbooks with nudity

My children's school year started this week. I have had a look at their new schoolbooks.

My oldest child, 15 years old son, has a new book in biology which concentrates on humans in every aspect. There is a full one page photo at the start of each chapter, and one of them shows a naked family! (This is the title page for the chapter about heredity, if I remember right, or alternatively about reproduction.) In the picture there are a man and a woman half-sitting sideways, and sitting in front of them a boy and a girl (the age of the children may be between 4 to 8 years, the boy is obviously younger than the girl). Otherwise you cannot see anything strategic, but the boy's little penis can be seen.

The picture is nothing special to Finnish children, who always have seen their family members naked, or to their parents. I don't think that anyone would say it is inappropriate in a schoolbook. I am only wondering if this kind of picture would be accepted e.g. in the States.

I didn't find more naked pictures in this and other books. The illustrations about genitals are drawings in the standard way.

I remember that my own biology book for senior high school had in the same way full page photos as title pages of chapters, and for the chapter titled "Individual" there was a picture of a small naked child swimming, his or her bum showing.

Drawings of naked children, usually swimming or in sauna, are not uncommon in schoolbooks. I remember having seen them in the books of three generations (my parents', my own and my children's).

Kari, since you mention your son 15yrs, i'm not sure how it is in Finland but in some other countries they will already have started with sex-education at school for youngsters that age. Kids magazines aimed at that age are also full with nudity related articles (body, sex etc).

Yes, they already have had at least some sex-education.

I haven't seen because we don't subscribe or buy those magazines. My sons (the younger is 13) haven't any interest in them, or in girls, or sex. They are computer nerds.

I'd be extremely surprised (unfortunately) to such a photo in a school book in Australia. In days of old there would not have been a problem.

The levels of paranoia, censorship, right-wing zealotry and body hatred concerning images of nude children has risen to such a level I'd half expect there to be a raid on the school! Very sad.

I can just see the angry parents storming the schools about the "offensive" pictures in their children's schoolbook if that was done in this country, although supposedly it is done in some parts.

I haven't found anything like that in my children's books. Although I must admit that I don't generally look through them. My wife (who teaches school) did make it a point to show me a book she was using titled "Anmials should NOT wear clothes". I agreed with the book, although it did mot mention that we too are animals

I also remember a while back with the infamous "sex ed" that is offered in schools here that my sister was all worked up because they showed the boys pictures of cirumcsized and not circumsized penises as part of the discussion and talked about the difference. She was even more white and in shock when I responded "And as well they should have!".
