  • Writing a Novel

I'm going to write speculative fiction (Mostly fantasy, but some science fiction). Do you remember any science fiction or fantasy that includes nudity? My first novel is going to feature nudity.

What kind of nudity are you wondering about regarding your novel? Also, is your novel meant for adults or young adults?

As for what I can think about:

    Young adult books:

Harry Potter series has a few scenes of nudity (Harry taking a bath in the Prefect's bath in the fourth book, Harry and Hermione seen in an evil vision to taunt Ron in the final book).
His Dark Materials has a few scenes of innocent skinny dipping (two roughly 11-12-year olds---boy and girl and a woman all in different scenes, although a previous described scene had the girl with a group of boys)
Newberry Winners (best book by the American Library Assn)
When You Reach Me: Time travel caused nudity of a man that the main character (sixth grade girl) sees once.
The Giver: two eleven year-olds, boy and girl, bathe elderly woman and man.

    As for other books,
"Imzadi" is a Star Trek novel by Peter David where we finally get to see a Betazed Wedding, where all participants, including the guests, are naked.

There is a list of science fiction books at http://naturistplace.com/nudesf.htm It was last updated in 2000, but still has 13 authors and works including descriptions of the specific nude scenes.

I'm afraid for adults and not teenagers. The main character is a shifter (a werewolf/human hybrid), and it's set in the world of Eberron (currently owned by Wizards of the Coast). Since my main character has an animal side to him, nudity comes naturally for him.

Apparently, I can only talk about nudity in my novel here. I announced it on the official discord site, and they erased my announcement. I am going to have nude scenes in my novel, and I'm going to be as open about it in my writing as Robert Heinlien was. Although it's a fantasy, I wanted to do this because nudity is good (most of my readers probably won't see it that way, though).

Since my main character has an animal side, best to represent that with nudity.

Does the nudity only come around his shape-shifting or will there be nudity elsewhere? As for shapeshifting, In another Young Adult series, (The Young Wizard series) one of the books had the two main characters (a boy and girl roughly 12 years old) having to change into whales, necessitating them to have to strip their bathing suits off beforehand. At first, they are embarrassed, but over the course of the book, they get used to being naked around each other, eventually getting caught coming out of the water by the girl's younger sister, and finally having the girl's parents escorting the two out to the water's edge late one night.

No, the nudity will be a part of his everyday life. For instance, when they play their variant on Capture the Flag, everyone is nude in the forest except for their shoes. It's not only going to be around his shapeshifting.

I enjoyed The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, though it has some creepy aspects and ends tragically. It's the story of a man who makes sudden and uncontrollable jumps into the past and the future, revisiting incidents involving himself at different points in his life. But when he jumps in time, his clothes don't jump with him--he always arrives naked. The book doesn't really make a very big deal about that aspect of the situation, but it is made clear.
