Oh, and it's celebrated in Mexico as Independence Day.
In the U.S. it's just a excuse to get ripped and have a party!

Yes, it is the Mexican Independence day. It celebrates the defeat of the French Army by the Mexicans at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Now on a lighter note. It could not have been much of a battle. It was the French, after all. The French were surrendering at the first shot. All the French Officers were resigning on the spot. They began dressing themselves up as women because they knew they were fixing to get scr-wed.

Cinco de Mayo is the second holiday most associated with excessive drunkenness, after St. Pat's Day. However, anyone who has taken Spanish class knows the history behind the holiday (Battle of Puebla).

This is the holiday where the French brought their national flag to North America, the all white one. As with everything esle the French started (suez canal, Panama Canal, Viet Nam war, WWI, WWII and other things) the USA has to finish it for them.
