Check out Fox Channel's topical show called "The Pulse" tonight. It airs at 9:00pm eastern. They are going to tell us what really goes on at "nudist colonies" [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif[/img] (their words, not mine). As if we didn't know!! [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif[/img]

It will be interesting to see what kind of "coverage" they give us...pun intended.

If the episode was advertised as you describe it, don't be surprised if it turns out to be all about pedophilia; not exactly rip-roaringly positive coverage for nudism. But I could be wrong.

I'm unable to work up high expectations for a show with so little research behind it that they're still using a term that is a generation or two out of date.

We'll be gone. I was going to set the trusty VCR, but then I decided not to bother.

Well, I did watch the segment.

After seeing the previews and the general format of the show leading up to the segment, I have to say that they're choice of terminology was quite deliberate. The promotional department had a field day sensationalizing it. I also have a feeling that being next to last segment on the show (before an "American Idol" update segment) was also very deliberate.

The segment itself, however, was quite well done. I don't know if Paradise Lakes was a good example, but that's a personal opinion. They did a comparison of a luxury resort with a traditional campground.

Overall, it was factual and possibly informative. That said, given the contrast between the hype and the content, I would say that an underinformed viewer probably isn't any more informed after watching than before.

I liked the segment on the Fox show called Pulse. I was expecting possible derogatory statements, but the only remark that I did not care for was when he said "Coming up is a segment about a resort that you probably would not want to go to if you had any shread of modesty". When describing Paradise Lakes Resort near Tampa Florida, it was mentioned that they have seven pools and they have over 140 employees. The reporter said that this luxury resort has everything except possibly clothes hangers in the closets.

Views were shown of persons exercising in the exercise room, a couple ordering a meal in one of the restaurants, view of the check-in lobby, nude singers, nude couples dancing, nudes in the beauty salon, brief interviews with nude women, nude paddle boaters, nude tennis players, etc. The genitals were "fuzzed" from view.

The segment compared the luxury Paridise Lakes Resort with the humble facilities of the Southern Exposure group of Florida. They interviewed a middle aged man there who indicated that they do not have a swimming pool yet, but have a pond, and that they had to call an "alligator removal man" to haul away an alligator, seven feet long, that got into their pond. They showed a nude group around a picnic table and some nude persons around large pots cooking, as it is an all voluntary group with no employees.
The reporter and the segment showed no disrespectful nor condescending attitude.

I watched the segment, and was quite amazed by the contrasts between two different types of nudist facilities, a nudist resort compared to a nudist campground. It was quite informative, and as stated, it did show the main difference between the two, e.g.: one employee as compared to many employees, one swimming pool (pond) compared to seven pools. I have to say, give Fox credit, they did do a great job, but what followed was hysterical.

It immediatly led into another subject, which started showing videos of a monkey (chimp) walking, and the caption stating something about walking erect. My wife had to walk away, laughing, especially since the proceeding subject had to do with nudists.

I have to admit that I did not have high hopes that Fox would show nudists in a positive light. The "teaser" I saw last night for the show said something like, "What really goes on at a nudist colonies? These folks really let it all hang out..." Of course, like anything on mainstream TV, the nudity aspect was totally sensationalized.

Anyway, at worst, the segment made us look a little eccentric, but at best, it gave America a realistic view inside a nudist resort, showing everyday people enjoying nudity.

About the "outdated term" nudist colony: Didn't the guy from Paradise Lakes use this term? I swore I heard him say the words "nudist colony", but I was so shocked I'm not sure that's what he really said.

I had taped the segment, so to answer your question as to the use of the term "nudist colony" I played the tape over and over and found that Joe Lettellier, President of Paridise Lake Resort said, and I quote,"This is not your father's nudist colony. This is a totally new concept. This is a resort. Our resort is a toally different atmosphere with all our amenities, with our gym, our spa, beauty salon,our club --"
Later on in the program, when they briefly show some very old footage of one of the first nudist groups, his voice says, "The original, quote, nudist colonies, were set up by a group of people who wanted to practice the lifestyle". After his quoting the term "nudist colony" he then continues using the term "nudist facilities".

gamblefish and David77: your both hit the nail on the head, when you stated what the show represented. It represented the difference between todays nudist resorts/facilities as compared to yesteryears' nudist colonies. As described, back then, the movement was people just wanted to hang out in the nude, whereas today, people are chosing nudism as a way of their own preference in everyday life.

The segment was okay. Short but had some information most of us already know. It's really too bad that the media can't just report anymore without putting their own little slant on the topic. I'd just like the information and not the sarcasm and amateur stand up comic jokes.

I thought that Paradise gave a distorted view of their club in a few ways. First of all the first two singers doing karaoke are usually not nude when there are no cameras. I've been there enough to know who wears what. The great majority of singers are dressed or half dressed. Most people dress in the gym as well. I'd say about half the tennis players are dressed and half not. I think that perhaps the clientel were dressed because the cameras were there so a few volunteered to be nude on camera so I guess it all comes out even.

I thought the show took some cheap shots at Southern Exposure too, making it look very inferior to Paradise when I think the reality is that the two places are just very different. The only thing they really have in common is that they are both for nudists, and Paradise isn't even %100 nudists. Sometimes people prefer a campground over a resort and one is no better than the other.

I thought the show was really bad. I've heard things about Paradise Lakes before, but thought I might still like to see it. Not any more! Seeing this show totally turned me off to PL. Not only were there several women in thongs, they also showed a man in a thong plus some sort of really ugly and I guess supposedly "sexy" see through get up, that is not what "nudism" is about! And cyndiann just said they showed more nudity at PL than there really is. It makes me sick that PL is called a "nudist" resort and is part of AANR! (From seeing this show I was far more interested in going to Southern Exposure, at least it looked like a club that might fit my values more.)

Also except for a couple clothed staffers, I don't think I saw anyone under the age of 50, (at either PL or SE) that is sad as well. There needs to be more young people at the clubs and parks. No insult intended to anyone, but seeing older people walking around in thongs and see throughs on TV, isn't going to attract many young people IMHO.

Sounds like you had your mind up before you watched it.... you are sick just because a few women wore thongs? They are clothing optional!

You guys wonder why there aren't more women nudists and this kind of attitude explains some of it. Women (most) like to dress up sexy and go out! If you guys tried looking at these things from a female point of view maybe you'd get someplace.

You didn't look very well... the first singer is under 50 and so were several sitting at the bar. Yes, we do need more young people and you will find most of them at the free beaches because people at the clubs have too many freakin rules, especially ones that discriminate against the younger people.

Paradise could care less if they don't attract the younger ones... they are after a different type of nudist, the retired or near retired people with lots more money to spend than the young ones do.
