No surprises there, then. It was a stupid gimmick destined to fail. Most Brits (like most other nationalities) have no intention of stripping naked in front of strangers!

    Nudity with strangers...

Well, I think the phenomena has to do with people who cares more about how they look rather than who they are.

I think that naturism is in decline in many ways, in the sixties, people were swimming naked at the YMCA and in many other places. Now, we have problems to keep even beaches that have a long history of nude bathing.

Now, the rare countries were nudism made some progress in the last 20 years, are probably Spain and Portugal. Even countries with an old tradition of nude public bathing such as in Japan, the old nude way in japanese baths and spas tends to become less popular in big cities because people have everything they need in their homes...

Maybe the tide will change. On the other hand, many people have no problem to post their sexual activity for free in popular free porn sites like youporn...

A shame. Nudity is being portrayed even in childrens programming nowadays.

Wife saw a commercial about nudity last night during primetime.

Well, what about the 1000's that strip for Spencer Tunick? You are way off the mark.

I was thinking that too. Has Spencer Tunick done shoots in Britain?

I suspect he is able to sell the idea better somehow.

Yes, Tunick has. I rented his Naked World a while ago and he included Britain. In fact it was one of his biggest successes. The British public warmly and whole-hearted embraced the opportunity to "get their kit off" as they say. He actually had the best reception there. Ironically France was about the least receptive. While no one was actually opposed to him photographic nudes he had almost no volunteers either. It was like it's o.k. as long as it's someone else posing but not me, seemed to be the attitude. It was actually a very interesting film. I wonder if it was just bad luck in who they asked or if there was a different reason they said no. Maybe they should try again with a little more planning.

Well, Britain did have Benny Hill, Monty Python and others who showed various body parts on the telly!

I don't think naturism is declining. I think what we are seeing is a polarisation of attitudes by which people are either attracted to naturism and so lose their inhibitions, or else they do not, in which case they affirm and reinforce their inhibitions and live nudity-free.

I heard a participant of the Spencer Tunnick shoot in London being interviewed on TV. He said he had travelled from Manchester to be a part of it (a 400-mile round trip) because he had followed Tunnick's work for some time. Tunnick's shoot here had been promoted on UK nudist websites and forums and I had no doubt that a good portion of the people taking part were either already card-carrying nudists, or people who have been socially naked before and people who generally led an "alternative lifestyle".

My perception appears to have been confirmed by the fact that, while the Trinny and Suzannah shows are massively popular in the UK and they appealed throughout the whole of the UK for volunteers, they managed a miserable 100 people - far fewer than they wanted

Most of the Benny Hill shows didn't even show a flash of nipple! He did a few shows aimed more at an adult audience, but he relied far more upon innuendo than exposure. Monty Python's TV programmes generally showed little more than momentary back views of nudity and even they were usually on quite late at night.

In a way you make my point. Such programmes don't actually show that the British are relaxed about nudity - but that they are titillated by it. They view it as naughty not normal!

Benny Hill and Monty Python were also (correct me if I'm wrong) early 70's. I bet in the 30 plus years since then things have moved at least a little forward, like they have for most of the world.

Yes, things have changed in that 30-odd years. But more than a decade ago, an advert for shower gel was shown on UK TV for the first time which showed a glimpse of a woman's nipple when showering. That same advert had been shown on television across Europe, but as soon as it was shown here, the TV regulator received complaints and it was withdrawn because it had, for many people, crossed the threshold of acceptability.

I would say that we now see slightly more non-sexual nudity on British TV and slightly less sexual nudity than we did 30-years ago, but it almost always occurs after the 9pm watershed and is accompanied by warnings beforehand.

Who stays up after 9:00 PM to watch tv. It's past bed time for most of us as some of us need our beauty sleep!
