  • 12-year-old boy naked hero

    From MSNBC:

Boy, 12, helps police foil attempted robbery
Two brothers jump out windows to get help for their grandmother

NEW YORK - A 12-year-old boy just getting into the shower heard a crash and his grandmother scream, so he jumped naked out of a second-floor window and called 911, helping police foil an armed robbery, police said.

“I knew I had to get out, get help,” Edwin Alamo told the New York Daily News in Saturday’s edition.

His brother, Jose Rodriguez, 21, jumped out of another window in the Bronx home Friday and ran to a nearby restaurant for help.

Police responding to the call shot and wounded two armed suspects after they pointed their guns at the officers and refused to drop them, said NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne.

Both of the shot suspects were in stable condition at a hospital, according to police. None of the officers or the occupants of the home was injured, police said. A third suspect surrendered.

His mom, Maria Melendez, 40, praised her sons’ actions. “They did something brave,” she said. “They risked their lives to save ours.”

That's awesome. When I was that age, I would have thought long and hard about running for help naked. I hate to say I probably would have tried to get dressed first. Good for him.

No question that the boy had his priorities in the right place. I suspect that living in the Bronx caused him to have a different understanding of the significance of a crash and a scream than might be the case for a 12 year old living in a peaceful midwest town.

Naked or clothed, the kid used his brains. I do agree that living in the inner city the kid is on the "alert" much more. Sad but true.

It's apparent when a life or death situation arises, people tend to act, clothed or not. Life threatening emergencies take precedence over dress attire. Those questions will come up later, but the first and foremost is to get help to those who are in need.

That 12 year old kid is a hero, in my book.

Some real quick thinking on his part. You don't see this too often.

great article! the 12 year old sprang into action not letting his being nude get in the way of helping. wonder how many adults would do that nude?

Irrespective of age or gender, this would always be a great example of a heroic person getting his or her priorities right - should be more like it..

Hopefully the boy didn't get cited for indecent exposure afterwards

                      Tiger,

That would have been really sad if he had been cited for that. How "indecent" is a twelve year old boy in the nude?

There have been other incidents similar to this one in which heroic or desperate actions have been taken on the part of a person in the nude. But nevertheless, he did an outstadning job in respsonding the way he did. He, in my opinion, should be commended. I do admit jumping or running out of a dwelling nude is a bit on the akward side, but you have to consider the circumstances. In Sept. 1999, we had a good size earthquake strike out here in Southern C.A. around 2:45AM. One of the tenants in our apartment complex ran outside without a stitch of clothes on. Being that she acted impulsively, she ran back inside and grabbed her clothes when it was over. There have been other incidents in which naked residents have scrambled out of burning homes because they were unable to get their clothes due to the flames blocking the path to their bedrooms or what have you. In all of these instances, none of them were cited for indecent exposure because they felt their lives were on the line! If any police officer would have cited them for that, I personally would label them the lowest scum on this earth! There was a reason why this was done and it was not shear exhibitionism or anything like that!

Why you even ask that? There must be significant differences in the legal systems of different countries. From what age on a person is legally responsible of his/her acts? In Finland that age is 15 years, so there would be no question about citing the 12 years old boy.
