  • Does letting your kids see you naked increase body confidence?

A few years ago, when my son hit puberty, he became horrified by my naked body.
"Oh God, Mum, NO!" he'd cry, running from my room and shielding his eyes. "Put some clothes on!"
Still, I'm glad that he regularly saw me naked before then. It's important for kids to know what real bodies look like, bodies that don't belong to celebrities, or porn stars, or fitness gurus devoted to physical perfection.

The last few positive articles in this regard have come from women in England. It's no secret Europe is more accepting of nudity than this country. Unfortunately this country has spent the past couple decades promoting shame shame shame.

      I don't think it's shame they are promoting. I think it's greed.

Like many kids, my daughter dropped out of nudism at the onset of puberty.

"Still, I'm glad that he regularly saw me naked before then. It's important for kids to know what real bodies look like, bodies that don't belong to celebrities, or porn stars, or fitness gurus devoted to physical perfection."

And I agree with that wholeheartedly. Up until she dropped out, we (her mother, herself and I), took it a bit further than the author, as simply not covering up around each other evolved into all of us spending time nude at home; and we took her to the resort/club with us every summer. Being nude around each other, and with other nudists of all ages, I think gave her an appreciation for people, diversity, and what people "really look like." She's off to college now, and has decided to get into the medical field, undoubtedly in part because she gained an appreciation for people - through nudism.

Remembering her nude and confidently approaching other nudists, or encouraging friends and relatives to be comfortable with their bodies leave no doubt as to the positive impact social and family nudity has had for her. Nudism might be over for her - for now, but the lessons learned are definitely still there.

It's too bad this is still "too controversial" for so many parents.
