Summer is on the waning side and Lammas is here!
    The first harvest! GRAIN!

Not one of my best hollidays, but can be fun none the less!

    http://www.schooloftheseasons.com/lammas.html

Christians might find this artical interesting!

Last year, some friends made a man of bread....anatomically correct......and served it with a feast! The penis of the bread man was the first taken......OUCH!

          This link may work...
          http://www.schooloftheseasons.com/lammas.html

""The grain dies so that the people might live. Eating this bread, the bread of the Gods, gives us life. If all this sounds vaguely Christian, it is. In the sacrament of Communion, bread is blessed, becomes the body of God and is eaten to nourish the faithful. This Christian Mystery echoes the pagan Mystery of the Grain God.""

There is no denying that when the early Catholic church merged with the Roman pagan empire to become the Roman Catholic church....many beliefs were melted together.

The idea that the bread actually becomes the body of Christ is....a Catholic Mystery indeed. But not a christian one. I'm not a cannibal

My church celebrates "passover", same as Jesus did in the upper room. It's a ceromony signifying delivery from bondage (what Moses did on a small scale echoing what Jesus would do on an infinate scale). The practice goes back to Moses (1420 BC). Lammas dates back to 1100 AD....but the bread tastes good either way.

          Yay Bread!!

thanks for this guys, i have never heard of Lammas before, a bread festival is right down my street. Its kinda more interesting than circumcision... But seriously! DSD may I ask what church you are part of? My church back in Aus would be interested in such a ritual / liturgy but most probably wouldnt be. We also celebrated a liturgy based on passover on Maundy Thursday to start Easter. Im very curious how it fits in for others.
            cheers

As I'm reading this post the movie "Dancing at Lughnasa" comes to mind. Does anyone know if the celebration of Lammas was a theme of the movie?

I'm a Seventh-Day Adventist. It's a pretty biblically sound denomination, not perfect, but I like it ok

We use "communion" and "passover" interchangibly and rather than it being a simple ritual, it's a time of rememberance. There is usually a sermon attached that describes Moses delivering teh children of israel from Egypt and the analogy of Jesus delivering mankind from the bondage of sin.

The bread is flat...unleavened. And there is grape juice. I actually used to like the taste of that bread a lot when I was growing up, at one point we got ahold of the recipie and made some of our own at home as a snack. It went well with Spaghetti too

                          MM Greenman,

I admit that Lughnasadh is one of those Sabbats that I have a hard time connecting to. Perhaps it's because there's so much going on now with summer winding down and school starting and the harvest coming and....

But anything with bread attached? I'm all about that.

Hope you have a great holiday!

                          BB,
                          Vin

thanks for the info DSD, I dont know much about the SDA except in Australia they have a large hospital and there are often contentious issues about blood transfusions. Does that impact on your medical training, or just where you might choose to work when you are qualified?
