Out of the Closet (Sorta)

I've been a closet nudist for a few years now and am slowly coming out now. Yay!

But yeah tried to come out of the closet a few years ago and started by telling my dad who then kinda told me I was gonna die alone and that scared me back into the closet for a few years..... My dad is a jerk....

Few years later I talked to a few people online about it, who didn't think it was weird at all, so I decided to try telling friends offline. First I told was my girlfriend, and then some of my closest friends none of who seem to care. (Though a lot of them just said they don't care as long as I wear clothes around them which I do so they're happy. ^^)

Told my mom who thinks it's weird, but isn't going stop me... Haven't told my dad again yet though.... I want to, but I'm afraid he'll react even more negatively than last time... He's not the most understanding person and is still a little miffed I'm a nerd instead of a jock. ^_^; Ah well guess that's just how things turn out.

Haven't actually been nude with anyone else yet, just cause well no one else wants to really try it except my girlfriend who lives a hundred miles away. Hopefully when I visit her this summer we can go to a resort or something.

Anyways I'm in college now which is nice cause I have my room I don't have to wear clothes in since my family isn't around.... (Well home for summer now but going back in fall.)

So semi out of closet in that a lot of my friends know, as well as mother. Yay! Maybe I'll get the courage to come all the way out soon.

The main thing I'm curious about is what is the best way to tell roommates, or am I better off just only doing it in my private room and not telling them? My roommates are kinda chosen randomly instead of picked out since the school is so big.

That and I just wanted to talk to other nudist sand naturists since none of my friends in real life were really interested in trying. ^^;

To answer your first question ... the best way to tell a roommate is straight up and first thing (be they male or female).
Sounds like you live in a dorm with communal "den, bath and kitchen" areas with private sleeping quarters from your phrasing.

In answer to the second question, you could seek other students with similar interests in nudism and ask to room with them or just let your 'assigned' roommates know upfront that you just might happen to go the the toilet in the middle of the night wearing the suit you were born in ... back in my day matriculating it was common for most students to be nude when sleeping and some where nude in their dorms most other times as well (this is not counting the nude sunbathing that all the girls did either on the water tower hill or down by the river), remember this was a few years back though.

I guess I'm just worried if they react negatively and then having to live with them for a whole year afterwards if they don't like it....

You have made a huge step forward. Now listen to me, YOU ARE NOT WEIRD! Enjoying nudity is normal. It is good and you are among friends. I see from your post you are in Florida take a road trip to Haulover beach in Miami. You will feel a great sense of freedom and a sense of belonging. Take the chance I promise you it's worth it.

I had no trouble in college with my roomies. I simply was naked in my room and if they came into my domain they were expected to deal with it. When in the common area I would slip on shorts or something. Within a few weeks they were all used to me and I was able to be nude anywhere in our suite. After that the only time I put on clothes was if one of the guys brought in guests. Often enough I could stay naked even then.

Letting those close to you know you're a nudist is tricky, and entirely dependent on how well you know them. There are close friends of mine who don't have any idea, and friends who see me nude all the time. You get a feeling for those who can handle it and those who can't. I never pressured any of them, just waited until I felt the time was right and told them. Usually it was coincident with swimming or hot tubbing or sharing a hotel room.

Hello randomness. Good job in taking your first step! But regarding your roommates, I don't think I would exactly push that issue yet since like you said they are chosen at random and you don't know where they stand on that. As far as your family, I completely understand because NONE of my family members know that I am a nudist and it must stay that way in order to maintain a good relationship with them. Nevertheless, good job once again! I do hope it works out with your girlfriend because it is real hard to get females into nudism especially by a single male. Hang in there!

Take your time and take it step by step. You will see how it goes and how far you can go. I am talking with being nude in your room, take nude trips to the bathroom. In the morning, do not dress right away etc. It will all come by itself.

Just do what feels comfortable for you ! Life is too short to be crowded into functions you do not like. If it feels good, then do it!

First off, good for you for telling your family. That was a huge step. As for dad not liking the idea, at least you were honest and I sure he appreciates that. I do agree with what everyone else is saying to you, take your time with your roommate and the rest of the world. They all need a little time to adjust to the idea, even dad!

Randomness, kudos to you! You've met with some diverse opinions in your honesty, but good for you for standing up for something you enjoy and believe in. Don't let anybody put you into hiding. And, if you're weird or crazy then that makes an AWFUL LOT of us crazy! ;-) Nudity crazy - isn't that just ridiculous! Now drugs, fighting, abuse of all sorts, oppression of all sorts, - the list goes on - now those things are crazy and wrong. Nudity crazy - that's just plain silly. Again, kudos to you!

Everyone is not going to agree with your decision, even family or close friends. If it makes you happy and feel good, great! The main idea is that they know how you feel and to let you know they diagree, so as to be able to visit, etc., without offending each other.

Thank you for the advice though I have a couple of months before I head back to college. ^^ Hopefully roommates won't mind habits once I get to know them but if they do well I still have my own private room. ^^

Assuming you're "going back to college" - that means you're probably over 18.

Which means if you think your parents would have some problem with your behavior, it's to the mutual benefit of ALL - you AND your parents -- not to tell them anything.

Over on another thread I started - "what's keeping you from participating in nude recreation?" I did not see such an answer, but I've talked to a lot of people in chats, etc. -- one reason given "uh, I don't know what my parents would think. I'm afraid if they found out, they'd be really upset with me."

What shocks me is that the response comes from men in their mid-20s, or 30s or even people in their 40s. If someone is 25 and has to have parents' approval to do ANYTHING, they've got other problems to deal with.

I don't necessarily agree with you. I think that regardless of age, most people want approval from their parents--it's only natural. We don't want to ever feel like we disappoint them. How we deal with that approval or disapproval, however, is another issue.
