Social Nudity and the Shy Bladder or Paruresis syndrome.

Being that young people and shyness of being nude socially has been a topic of discussion over several Categories recently, I'm restarting a 3 year old dormant topic/thread on a similar or same subject in "Young Naturists" Category with new updated references, before you jump on me for cross Category posting from posts 3 years ago in "Miscellaneous".

Paruresis, also known as pee shy, shy kidney, bashful bladder, or shy bladder syndrome, is a type of social anxiety disorder, that can affect both men and women, in which the sufferer is unable to, hesitant, or has a hard time urinating in the (real or imaginary) presence of others, such as in a public restroom.

Do you have or know of others that have ever mentioned or experienced this social anxiety disorders? Does this affect or concern people of all ages?

Does being a nudist or naturist and being nude around others have any effect or easy this anxiety, bashful, or shy social disorder while urinating in the presence of another nudist or naked person of either gender around you?

I do experience a little difficulty with shy bladder, sometimes. I'm a little slow-starting sometimes, and the longer it takes, the more uncomfortable it gets. Once I get started, I don't really care. If the restroom is busy and someone is standing behind me, waiting a turn, I have had to go out and come back later. Yet, once at a gas stop, using a restroom that had a toilet and urinal, I didn't lock the door. Someone else started to enter, said Oops, excuse me! and backed out. The door was slow to close itself, and he stood in the hall and could see me until almost done. I figured it's a two-holer, so what's the matter? But i was already started when he opened the door.

I guess it's psychologically related to it being a "body function" and not the nudity, because I could shower in an open shower in full view of others, or shave nude at the lav (have done both) and not be bothered by it. I expect nudity, and being nude, in a locker room or camp bath house.

I have allways been VERY shy and could never use a urinal stall, I allways went into the cubicle and locked the door. BUT since becoming a nudist some years ago I have found that, as a result of my wife and I being out in the paddocks or bush nude , when a call of nature is necessary we just do it there and then, peeing in the presence of each other. It was hard at first but over a year or so I became more relaxed (overcoming the Paruesis).

Now I can use a urinal stall with others and almost never go into a cubicle and if I needed to I leave the door open to pee.

I have been on some horse trail rides recently with a hundred or so riders riding through hills and paddocks. Nobodby takes any notice of a person off the horse a little away from the group facing away (or squatting behind a tree) having a pee.

Nudism is great way to overcome shyness.

I've had it since I was a kid and still have it. I also consider that I have a bad case of it. NOt only can I not go if someone is around, but I can't even pee straight in the water because of the sound. Have to aim for the edge.

Social nudism has not helped in solving this prob for me.

The one good thing about this is that it gave me a new talent. I have mastered the art of counting and being aware, even from a far distance, of who and how many people are in the washroom at any given time. Also, if it's time to go, I just look around the place and by the look of people walking I can tell if they are going to the restroom or not.

I have it myself. It has been getting better over the years, before I could not go if anyone was in the same public restroom, now I can do it easily if I am in a stall, but it is no go if I am at the urinal and someone is at the urinal next to mine, distance makes it easier.

This is a common, though obviously not universal, problem. With me it's a sometime and completely unpredictable thing. It strikes me less frequently with age, but I can never be certain when entering a shared restroom that I'll be able to successfully use the urinal.

Interestingly--and I have no explanation for this--I have the least problem in cultural situations that are the most casual about bathrooms. At naturist facilities with a bathroom shared by both sexes I've stood at the urinal while women walked behind me on the way to a stall. I've been in many countries where the female attendant was either in full view or actually working in the same room. In Paris the line of women waiting to get into the female side formed directly behind the urinals. In Thailand one rest stop had urinals along an outside wall, so that we stood with our backs open to a parking lot.

Not one problem getting started in any of those situations. But let me go into a crowded theatre or sports arena restroom in my home town, and I may find that I have to seek out a stall and close the door.

I guess it's just the nature of the problem.

i know this is an old feed but i was glad it was mentioned. I have no problems bein nude, but i am pee shy or more elaborate. i am shy when there is no noise like a faucet or music or something. weird?

I cannot stand to be watched when I pee. When at a urinal I try to think of other things. And man how can people carry on conversations while they piss? In college my first dorm had the tolit out without any stalls. I hated that. I also like privacy when I have to do the other number too.

Hi,

I'm also very pee shy as you want to call it.I just can't go will standing in front off a urinal stall.I'don't know how that comes,but I just can't go.
Every time I'm alone in a public restroom I try to use the urinal stall,but the idee of someone comming in just won't let me pee.
Any body got any advice on that?
Looks stupid when your friends use the urinal stall,and I go in to a cubicle and finnisch first

Social nudity has been a help. It was an intermittant problem anyway.

I thought it was just a problem I have. I am releived to read that it is a recognised problem. For abour 5 or 6 years I have had a problem 'going' in public toilets (open urinals etc), I get there in the end but take a long time to get going, particularly if i am with someone and they want to talk to me. When i can I now go into a cubicle to go, I guess its the cloest thing to the bathroom at home, and have no problem going then.

Strangely a recent conversion to nude sleeping has exacerbated the problem, fear of being caught naked in the toilet at home has resulted in a certain 'reluctance' to go during the night etc.
